(Comment from Robert H. Neff, great-nephew of the Callahans, in 2001: "This was the time of the depression and by the time the lawyers were paid, I don't believe there was much left, if anything at all. I don't think my Dad or his brothers got anything. However just before his death, Uncle Irb had been one of the wealthiest men in town."

From "Mahoning Dispatch" 20 Feb 1931

"JOHN LEWIS CALLAHAN DEAD;
WAS LIFE CANFIELD CITIZEN"

John Lewis Callahan, 69, died at 5:30 Tuesday morning at his home on Lisbon street of apoplexy with which he was stricken two weeks ago. He was the son of Lewis and Catherine Zuck Callahan and was born in Canfield June 2, 1861, and his entire life was passed in this place. For several years he conducted a meat market and devoted some time to agriculture. He was long a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. On May 15th, 1889, he was married to Miss Mary J. McCrone of Poland, who survives with one daughter, Mrs. Florence C. Reents, of Youngstown, and one son, Urban Callahan, of Tarentum, Pa. He also leaves one brother. I. Callahan, and a sister, Mrs. JC.W. Shaffer, both of Canfield. Funeral services held from the home Thursday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock were conducted by Rev. Glenn C. Cornell. Interment was made in Riverside cemetery, Poland."

Rebecca Caroline (Beccie) Sanzenbacher Callahan
Mrs. Irvin Callahan
30 August 1856 to 18 February 1939

From "Mahoning Dispatch" 24 February 1939

"MRS REBECCA CALLAHAN
SUMMONED BY HER MASTER"

"Mrs. Rebecca Callahan aged 82 years, died at 3:30 last Saturday morning at her home on North Broad street following an illness of three weeks, although her condition had kept her close to home for several years. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Sanzenbacher, early residents of Canfield, and was born Aug. 30, 1856, in a house only a short distance from the one in which she passed away. Her only other places of residence were a mile east of the village and for a short time on West Main street. On May 20, 1875, [sic – or 20 May 1877] she was married to Irvin Callahan, who died eight years ago. He for a considerable time was associated with her father in the tannery business. Mrs. Callahan was the last of her immediate family. She was a devoted member of the Methodist church, active in the Missionary Society and other good works as long as her health permitted. Memory of her will long be revered by a wide circle of friends. Funeral services in the Methodist church at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon were conducted by her pastor, Rev. George A. Gibson. Burial was beside her husband in the village cemetery."

NOTES:
1. According to the calendar from newspaper dates, Beccie died on Sat., 18 Feb 1939, but according to cemetery book of tombstone readings, she died on 21 Feb 1939. I believe newspaper is probably the accurate date.
2.Obituary 27 February 1931 for Irvin Callahan states the wedding date as 20 May 1877

COMMENTS:

Aunt Beccie's memories are being compiled in the Neff story that I am in the process of writing. A note of explanation that helps understanding the family history comes from one of Marjorie Neff Whittles' letters.

She writes, "Grandmother Neff's (Hattie) only sister, Rebecca Callahan, who was five year younger, had a close relationship with Grandmother Neff. Grandmother became totally deaf at childbirth and learned to read lips. Her sister, who I know as 'Aunt Beccie' had some hearing problems. When I was a child, she wore a hearing aid with ear headphones and a large battery, which was very unsatisfactory. Aunt Beccie and her husband, Irvin Callahan, (Uncle Irb) had no children and offered to help the Neff children. When my father (Cyrus) was of pre-school age, they accepted my father into their home an raised his as their own and gave him many opportunities. They then lived in a little house on West Main Street; later they bought the Judge Newton home and farm known as 'Parkview' on North Broad Street. This home is still standing and is a landmark. The farm was later developed into building lots and is now populated. At the time of my parents' marriage in 1903, they gave my parents property to build their home, also on North Broad Street, which, since 1927 has been a funeral home. Regardless of the fact that my father moved away from his parents' home, he continued to be loyal to them and also his siblings who he helped all through his entire life. My father was soft spoken and even tempered. Aunt Beccie and Uncle Irb were very involved in all family activities. All early Neff Thanksgivings and New Year's "Feasts" were held at their home every year. Christmases were at Grandmother Hattie's and Grandfather John E.'s. The meals were always lavish and took a week or more to prepare."

Besides family memories that are taken from oral history, her memory section will include articles from the "Mahoning Dispatch". Two pictures of Beccie are available. One was taken when she was about 33 (or about 1889) and the other was probably taken of Uncle Irb and her on their 50th wedding anniversary, 1925 or 1927, depending on which obituary is correct.

"Cyrus Neff was given a surprise last Friday night at the home of his uncle, I. Callahan, in honor of his 15th birthday. A large party of little folks was present and the occasion will long be pleasantly remembered. During the evening excellent refreshments were served."

"MRS. I. CALLAHAN INJURED
IN FALL ON HOME PORCH"
"Mrs. Irvin Callahan, aged 76 years, slipped and fell about 9 0'clock last Sunday night when she stepped out on a porch at her N. Broad street home to take in a bottle of milk, fracturing the neck of the femur of her right hip. Unable to arise she called for help, her cries finally arousing her nephew, C.C. Neff asleep in the house, who went to her assistance. Dr. C.H. Campbell was called and after learning the seriousness of the accident had her removed to the North Side unit Youngstown hospital. She suffers no serious pain except when she moves. As she is a diabetic a cast could not be used and Thursday surgeons provided an appliance whereby she will be able to move and sit up. The injury will keep her in the hospital at least six weeks. Mrs. Callahan is one of the oldest, best-known and most highly respected residents of the village and a host of friends sincerely regret her misfortune."

"Mahoning Dispatch" 23 Dec 1932
"Mrs. Irvin Callahan, in the North Side unit Youngstown hospital, where she was taken last week following a fall at her N. Broad St. home when she suffered fracture of her right hip, is reported to be doing very well. Appliances provided some days since make it possible for her to sit up part of the time instead of lying flat on her back as was necessary when she first entered the hospital. Several weeks will elapse however, before she is able to be brought home."

"Mahoning Dispatch" 01 Sep 1933
"MRS. REBECCA CALLAHAN
HONORED BY 20 FRIENDS"
"On Wednesday afternoon friends of Mrs. Rebecca Callahan to the number of twenty, members of the Methodist Sunday school class and Ladies' Aid Society, to which she has for many years belonged, called surprise-fashion at her North Broad St. Home to offer congratulations on her 77th birthday anniversary. Her welcome to the visitors was most cordial. There was social chat, singing of "Blest Be the Tie That Binds," and prayer by her pastor, Rev. G.C. Cornell. Light refreshments and favors were furnished by Miss Sadie Neff, niece of Mrs. Callahan, after which the company dispersed wishing Mrs. Callahan many happy returns of the day."
