APRIL 8 1886…Thursday
Roy John Neff
, my grandfather, "Pardner" to me, the seventh and last child of Harriet Sanzenbacher and John E. Neff was born on what is now Raccoon Road.

(Raccoon Road was originally called Hell Street, and the Mud School was located on Hell Street. In one of the school articles that I read, it is stated, " The first settlement of the road afterwards known by a name suggestive of a hot place was made in 1801 by three brothers from Connecticut by the name of Crane...". The townsfolk began to object and the street was renamed Crane Street, after this prominent family, who then lived on it, and did not want it said that they lived on Hell Street. Later it was given the name that it has today, Raccoon Road. J.L.N. 2001)

Selby NEFF was born on 2 Oct 1856 in OH - Mahoning Co. - Canfield Tp.1112,13399 He was named after his Uncle Selby Hine, prominent Canfield, Mahoning Co. OH citizen on 2 Oct 1856.13400 He was buried in Aug 1859 in OH - Mahoning Co. - Canfield - Canfield Village Cemetery - Section C Row 02 - Barnes Monument.13401 He died at 3y 2m & 27d - he had only been ill with croup for 24 hrs on 29 Aug 1859 in OH - Mahoning Co. - Canfield Tp.13402 Jennifer Neff, 2005
His birth date is calculated from date of death and age at date of death
On 31 Oct 2003 I visited Selby Naff's gravesite. The day was warm and balmy. A small purple flower bloomed beside the marker. The stone was easy to find - just to the east of the Barnes' Monument. Selby was laid to rest with his maternal grandparents. The inscription on the small white stone was hard to read and a verse that had been written on the bottom of it is illegible today. His name was spelled NAFF. The front of both stones face west. On the east side of the Barnes monument are the inscriptions for B.S. and Lois Hine, Selby's Uncle and Aunt. B.S. Hine was one of Canfield's most well-known citizens. [It should be noted that in old records, although his full name was Benjamin Selby, he went by “Selby”. Most likely Selby Naff was named for him.] Today they are still close, lying next to one another. In an Odd Fellows' memorial to B.S. Hine, who had no children, it is written, “He had a kind heart for all. Children were his pets, and their companionship was a delight to him and them.”
