Memories about John E. Neff from Family Members

From Marjorie Neff Whittle correspondence to Robert H. Neff in 1990
"I remember that for many years Grandfather Neff drove a Model T Ford and almost daily would drive out into the country, sometimes he drove very fast. Following Grandmother Neff's death in 1927, Grandfather lived with his only daughter, Aunt Sadie in Miami, Florida and seemed to enjoy the change and attended family dinners with us up North. He died in 1940; he and Grandmother are buried in the Canfield Cemetery. Their graves are near the cemetery entrance. Aunt Sadie, who died in 1959, is buried next to my grandparents."

From Edward Leroy Neff's correspondence to Robert H. Neff (undated)
"I remember Grandpa John's room with a fireplace where ears of popper corn hung at the side and they made popcorn in the fireplace. I remember a spittoon for chewing tobacco and Grandpa John E.'s rocking chair, his "throne". I recall his unloading cattle at the R.R. and driving them east on 224, a dirt road, to his farm. Once I bought a Model T Ford for $5, and Grandpa had the left rear fender covered with 1/8 inch of dried tobacco juice. The neighbors came to help Grandpa when his bronco, the "Model T", was in the ditch someplace because he said "whoa" and it didn't stop."

From Robert H. Neff in conversation with Jennifer Neff in 2002
"I remember John E. nicknamed me "Whitey" because I was such a towhead. I also remember as does Edward, that when we visited John while he was living with Sadie, John would slip us money and tell us to get him something to drink. Sadie was a teetotaler. John was not.
There is a story about John E. and Hattie's clean windows. John E. went to spit out the window and it hit the window. He said, 'That darn woman…kept 'em so clean, you can't tell if they are up or down.' "
Bob was 11 at the time he witnessed the following activity at his grandparents' home (he must have been watching too). "When Hattie became ill, John E. needed assistance in caring for her. A beautiful young Albert girl from the Palmyra Rd. area was hired. John E. was so fascinated with this gorgeous young woman that while Miss Albert watched Hattie, John E. watched Miss Albert."

07 July 2003 Robert Neff told his grandson, Max Fiffick, more memories: "I remember John saying, "What's the use of having bread in the house, if you haven't got whiskey?" When I was about 10 or 12, we asked Grandpa if he wanted to go on a pony and wagon ride with us to the farm. He thought that sounded good. It was a nice warm day and two or three kids, Grandpa and I set down the road. When we got to the farm, about 2 miles from home, we weren't too far down the lane when we hit a rut and the wheel broke off the cart. Grandpa said, 'You crazy kids, Now I have to walk home. I should have known better'"

From Jane Whittle Hahn phone conversation with Jennifer Neff on 09 July 2003
"You know, Grandpa was blind towards the end of his life. I remember that he ate his peas on a knife."

Harriett "Hattie" Louisa (Sanzenbacher) Neff
Mrs. John E. Neff
26 October 1851 to 03 April 1927

From the "Mahoning Dispatch"
08 April 1927

"Mrs. John E. Neff Dead
Always Lived in Canfield"

"Mrs. Harriett S. Neff, 75, wife of John E. Neff, died last Sunday evening at her home on East Main street after an illness that extended over a considerable period. Deceased was a daughter of the late John and Sarah Oswald Sanzenbacher and was born in Canfield Oct. 26, 1851, consequently was in the 76th year of her age. Her entire life was spent in and near the village where she enjoyed the respect and esteem of all who knew her. She was a most kindly woman, quiet and unassuming, one who left an impress for good. She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and active in its several branches of work. On March 31, 1870, she was married to John E. Neff, who survives with one daughter, Miss Sadie Neff, of Miami, Fla., and five sons, Ensign E., Martin J., Calvin C., Cyrus H., and Roy J. Neff all of Canfield. She also leaves one sister, Mrs. I. Callahan, and one brother, Charles Sanzenbacher, both of this place. Funeral services held from the residence Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock were conducted by Rev. H.A. Cassidy, pastor of the M.E. Church, and the remains were placed in the village cemetery mausoleum."

Memories of Hattie "Hat" Neff from Family Members

From Marjorie Neff Whittle in 1990 correspondence to Robert H. Neff

"In August of 1990 84 year old Marjorie Whittle remembers: "Grandmother Harriet Sanzenbacher Neff, known to family and friends as "Hat" was a very energetic and unusual person regardless of her deafness. She and Aunt Beccie, her sister, always rose early in the morning and had much of their housework completed by noon and had a rigid schedule...washing on Monday, ironing on Tuesday, etc. On Saturdays they baked pies and cakes and would take some of them to sell at the church exchange at the local grocery store where they also did their weekly shopping.

For transportation, "Old Bill", Aunt Beccie's horse, would be hitched to a phaeton; once in a while I, in my pre–teens, would go along. Both my Grandmother and Great Aunt were very active in the Methodist Church. One church group, the "Aid Society" did quilting weekly in Grandmother's home, in the parlor. Grandmother seldom let anyone share her concerns, except Aunt Beccie and never complained.

Grandmother Neff's Christmas Dinner (12 o'clock sharp) was attended by most of her children and all her grandchildren who ate at a separate table. In the mid-twenties, she and Grandfather moved across the street. (Uncle Roy Neff moved the old house and made it into a double house and then he built a large brick home on the old site, for his family). We grandchildren enjoyed these family gatherings and the special foods Grandmother prepared. A large Christmas tree was brought in from the woods and decorated. There was also a large stuffed Santa Claus. Sometimes we grandchildren would dress up and put on skits (sometimes we got pretty noisy). (In 1990, 84 year old Marjorie Whittle writes to my father, Your father (Roy) was Grandma's favorite. She referred to him as 'my son the plumber'."

From Edward Leroy Neff in correspondence to Robert H. Neff (undated)
Edward Neff was 15 when his Grandma Hattie died. His reflections are, "Her kitchen was her favorite domain. Cookies, homemade bread, three kinds of pies and cake were always available beside crocks of sauerkraut in the basement. I gathered the eggs, covered the vegetable winter storage barrel in the garden and ran errands. Grandma sewed a Bull Durham money sack inside Grandpa's long underwear for his trip to Florida. Her Christmas dinners were the event of the year."

In a letter from Ensign E. Neff's second wife, Frances, it is written that "Sadie baked little breads like her mother did for Christmas."

From Robert H. Neff in conversation with Jennifer Neff in 2002
Bob remembers that Grandmother Hattie always had chocolate-covered cream drops as a special treat for the young ones. He says that all the children were amazed at her lip-reading ability. She was so good at it that her profound deafness hardly seemed to be a disability.

From the "Mahoning Dispatch 4 July 1930
Note: John was 81 and rode in ana open air rumble seat.

"John E. Neff, his daughter, Miss Sadie Neff, and granddaughter, Mrs. Mary (Neff) Reebel, arrived here by automobile last Friday night from Miami, Florida, covering 1654 miles in four days, an average of more than 400 miles a day. While traveling through Virginia a storm threatened and the car was halted so that Mr. Neff could leave the Rumble Seat of the Roadster for a place in front with the women. The machine was still moving when Miss Neff alighted to assist her father in making the change, and when her feet touched the ground she was thrown down and injured. While suffering excruciating pain she pluckily continued the journey. On arrival here Dr. Lawton was called and he found that the neck of the femur of her right hip had been fractured. She was removed to the Salem City Hospital and given surgical attention. It will be three or more weeks before she is able to leave the hospital and a much longer time must elapse before complete recovery."
