CALVIN CARL NEFF
7-24-1878 to 6-24-1953
My Dad remembers as a little boy (maybe 1919) going shopping with his mother at Cal's grocery store. He love Uncle Cal. Call would tell him to reach his fist into the penny candy barrel and take whatever he could hold. What a treat! However, Bob thought it over and realized how much bigger Cal's fists were so the next time they went, he asked Cal to get the candy for him. (Now he had two pocketfuls instead of one.) *A side note in 1999 80 years later Joan, Bob's great granddaughter was held out a bowl of M&M's by her mother, Alexis. Alexis told Joan that she might have two. Joan reached her tiny, two year old fist into the bowl and got what she could. Alexis said, "NO, Joan, I said TWO!" So Joan reached her other fist into the M&M's and grabbed another fistful. She said to her mom, "I got two!" (The past is just a shorter word for the present.)
I don't remember much because I was so young. I do remember Uncle Cal visiting our home on Neff Dr. I liked him and could tell that my Dad really liked him. I thought his name was cool and I loved his big, old house.
JULY 3 1903
An important business deal was closed Monday afternoon when W.J. Dickson sold his general store to J.E. Neff and sons Calvin and Roy who immediately took possession. The store is one of the largest in the county outside of Youngstown and has for years been liberally patronized. The new firm will be known as The Neff Company and hopes by fair dealing and courteous treatment to retain all old customers and gain many new ones. The management of the business will largely devolve on C.C. Neff, who has had much experience. For a time at least the present efficient corps of clerks will be retained.
APRIL 6 1906
While C.C. Neff was lighting a gasoline lamp in the north window of the Neff Co., store, Friday night, the alcohol torch came in contact with embroidery shown in the window and in an instant flames filled the window. By quick work the blaze was extinguished before all stock in the window was destroyed or it could spread.
JULY 20 1906
A boil on C.C. Neff's left cheek has swollen his face so that friends are hardly able to recognize him.
AUGUST 15 1913
C.C. Neff has rented the first room of the Hawkins building on Broad street and will have an automobile station and office there.
JULY 27 1917
There was considerable excitement at the corner of Board and Main streets last Saturday night when an automobile driven by Mrs. C.C. Neff backed into a buggy owned by Eben Baringer. Mrs. Neff had driven slowly down West Main street and was heading into Broad street when she noticed its congested condition. Then she decided to back out and take another street. While doing this she by mistake placed her foot on the accelerator and the machine shot back into the buggy, jamming it against and breaking off a heavy concrete post and making a half circle of the iron hitching rail. Despite the terrific impact, which was heard a considerable distance, the buggy was not badly damaged only one wheel being wrecked and the body splintered. The pony attached to the unoccupied buggy stripped itself of part of the harness in slipping out of the shafts but made no attempt to break away from the hitching rail. It was uninjured. The automobile was only slightly damaged and occupants of the car escaped injury.
JUNE 11 1920
C.C. and C.H. Neff were in Cleveland on Wednesday and purchased two car loads of sugar.
APRIL 5 1929
New metal siding is being placed on the three -story frame building on the west side of Broad street owned by C.C. Neff.
PRIVATE STORIES ABOUT UNCLE CAL
My father told me several stories that I am going to keep only in my book about Uncle Cal. Dad requested this.
The first is that Dad's Uncle Cal really wanted the job of postmaster that Dad's brother, Charles Neff, got in 1935. I think there may have been some hard family feelings. Cal was suffering financially from the great depression and from the two great Canfield business fires in 1930 and 1932, which greatly hurt him financially. He had also lost his wife in 1930. Hard times.
Dad was Cal's favorite and one day Uncle Cal called upon him and told him that he wanted to give him some money but that it had to be a secret. Cal also wanted to give money to Dad's brother, Edward, and to his cousin, Bud. This left the others out so it had to be a secret. Cal asked Dad to deliver the money and convey his wishes. Bud blabbed and Dad was furious. It got him, and Ed to a degree, in a lot of trouble with their father. Dad thinks his father, Roy, made it up to the other two boys later. Dad never did like Bud too well after that. Bud was gay, but that was not the issue. It was that he had betrayed a trust.
Another story that is not for public knowledge is that Uncle Cal loaned Dad $15,000 to get started in business. That was a whole lot of money. Dad felt honored because he knew his uncle loved and trusted him. Dad faithfully made interest and payments on the debt. Dad's fear is only that he doesn't want to hurt someone else's feelings because they didn't get this kind of jump-start too.
When Dad went to Cal's house to get things in order, things had mysteriously disappeared. Dad is sorry he could not have preserved more.
Dear Dad, I am sending this for your approval. I have Uncle Cal's watch, which I am going to give to George for Christmas with the complete "Cal" book that I am assembling. I want you to have a chance to add or delete. Now would be a good chance for you to write any advice that this might trigger that you would like to impart to George. I love you, and I thank you for everything. XOxoXO Jennifer
